PURPOSE

Below is an email from Leon Holloway that I have saved which does a lot to share the purpose of the BATS.

This is a loose knit club of tandem teams that Leon and Lisa Holloway started in 1995. There are about 10-11 teams in the Bryan/College Station area. Once a month there is a scheduled BATS (Brazos Area Tandem Society) ride on Saturday where one couple hosts a light dinner, breakfast, or lunch after the ride (times and places are posted on the BATS home page). We also have informal rides every weekend (usually on Sunday). We hope to start having joint rides with both the Austin and Houston Clubs after the football season is over. We invite interested tandeming couples/familiesf to come to one of our group rides so we can welcome you and you bike into the community. Names and e-mail addresses of couples in the area are available on the BATS Home Page; please feel free to contact any of these people to arrange an informal ride. If you are new to tandeming you might want to know that there are several national organization that you might want to join. TCA (Tandem Club of America) is the oldest and probably best bi-monthly newsletter. Dues are $15/yr. Leon and Lisa Holloway can send/fax you an application. Another new magazine on the market is Tandeming. Both magazines have reports on bikes, tour tips, trip ? rally reports, products, etc. TCA also has hospitality homes all over America for places to stay while touring on your tandem. There is a SWTR (Southwest Tandem Rally) which will be held in Oklahoma this year and Austin area next year. Last spring it was held in East Texas. It is usually the last weekend in April. Another event interested riders should mark your upcoming years calendar for is for Hill Country Weekend. It is always held Easter weekend in Fredricksburg and attracts 2000-4000 riders. There are usually a 100 or so tandems who always ride together. A warm up for the SWTR. We look forward to meeting you in the near future. Happy cycling.
