STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

As interest and participation in the Coastal Zone Symposium series grew following its inception at San Francisco in 1978, it became evident that a formally-chartered organization was needed to provide basic planning and support for future conferences.  To this end, the Coastal Zone Foundation was incorporated in 1984 as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, public-benefit foundation.

Broadly stated, the primary purpose of the foundation, which is an entirely non-political entity, is the advancement and application of the scientific and related technical and professional knowledge necessary for management, protection and use of coastal and ocean resources.  More specifically, this is accomplished by conceiving and carrying out coastal-oriented conferences and meetings as, for example, the Coastal Zone symposium series.  The face-to-face exchanges inherent in these events, together with comprehensive proceedings, have proved highly effective in widely disseminating current coastal and ocean management information and practice.  The foundation typically plays a key role in bringing together volunteer and sponsoring-organization staff to plan and operate each event.  (To limit overhead, the foundation operates without permanent staff; volunteer and hired assistance is used, as needed).  The foundation receives conference funds from supporting sponsors, exhibitors and registration fees.  In turn, these funds are managed and disbursed for conference operations; assembly and publication of conference papers; and, where appropriate, future conferences.

The foundation also occasionally participates as a secondary sponsor in coastal-related conferences organized by other groups.

As concerns future activities, we are interested in possible foundation sponsorship of meetings or workshops on topics of current interest and publication of important technical and management data.

A list of past and current foundation activities is attached.
